6.4 The Keyboard Menu: Create Keyboard Macros
The fourth primary option available under the Main Menu is “Keyboard.” When
you pull down the Keyboard Menu, you’ll see a single selection, as shown in
Figure 6-28.
Figure 6-28. The Keyboard menu.
Using the Create Keyboard Macros option, you can add, view, modify, and delete
ServLINK keyboard macros. A macro is a sequence of keyboard keypresses and key
releases that form a command; when you trigger such macros, the ServLINK sends
the command sequences to the attached PC or KVM switch to cause it to do things.
Aside from the fact that it’s quicker to press one key or to click the mouse than it
is to press several keys, sometimes macros are
necessary
for the ServLINK system. For
example, if you’re in Host Mode and the software running on the selected Host PC
has crashed, you might want to send [Ctrl][Alt][Del] to that PC to terminate the
program. But if you simply press those keys on the ServLINK’s keyboard, the
ServLINK itself will receive and process them. To get around this difficulty, you can
open Create Keyboard Macros, select predefined macros such as “Ctrl+Alt+Del” (or
create and then select new macros for your application), and have the ServLINK
send the corresponding keystrokes to the attached PC or KVM switch without your
having to worry about the ServLINK intercepting.keystrokes that aren’t meant for it.
