10.3.1 Simplified Anesthetic Protocol for Rats and Mice
Before starting
o
Check if vaporizer is full. Fill up if necessary (see instructions for vaporizer rack).
o
Check weight of the activated carbon filters. Each filter whose weight has increase
by
more
than
50
grams
must
be
replaced
(incinerated).
If you are using filters whose weight has increased by more than 50 g, the
anesthetic cannot be filtered out of the air anymore and will get into the am-
bient air (ventilation may be required). Do not forget safety filter.
o
Check and, if necessary, close compressor bleed screw.
o
Turn on the compressor engine (black button) and set the oil separator (green but-
ton). After the compressor engine has been turned off automatically, the storage
container is filled and the compressor is ready for operation.
o
Check compressor outlet pressure is adjusted to 2.5 bars (manometer under fil-
ters).
o
Turn on the oxygen bottle.
o
In your NightOWL, turn on INLET and OUTLET valves of each mask that will re-
ceive an animal.
o
Check if the compressor vacuum manometer connected to the induction box is ad-
justed at its maximum. Press pedal to check the vacuum.
Anesthesia induction
o
Place animal(s) in the induction box.
o
On the inox bean holder is a 3 way gas distributor. Turn on the floodgate that
stream the induction box.
o
Adjust AIR flow meter to 1 liter / minute (maximum 3 liters / minute).
o
Adjust vaporizer to 4% (maximum 5%).
o
Wait until the animal is anaesthetized.
Anesthesia relay from induction to maintenance
o
Adjust vaporizer between 1.5% to 3% (depending on the species anaesthetized).
o
Adjust oxygen flow meter to 0.2 liter / minute for each mask (for 3 masks
→ 0.2 * 3
→ 0.6 liter / minute).
o
Turn off the AIR flow meter.
o
Adjust exhauster flow meter connected to NightOWL mask(s) to 0.2 liter / minute
for each mask (for 3 masks
→ 0.2 * 3 → 0.6 liter / minute). If required, increase
flow at the vacuum controller (green button). The flow rate can be checked on the
flowmeter located at the vaccum controller
or at the rack (depending on the revi-
sion of the anesthesia system) The flow must be regulated at the vacuum control-
ler.
If the 3
rd
flowmeter is mounted to the rack (revision with 3 flowmeters on the
rack) make sure the flowmeter regulator is fully opened. If not the compres-
sor could be overheated and damaged due to the higher air consumption.
o
Press exhauster pedal and wait 3 seconds minimum before opening the induction
box.
o
Open the induction box KEEPING YOUR FOOT PRESSING THE PEDAL till in-
duction chamber is open.
o
Transfer animal(s) from induction box to mask(s) into NightOWL.
o
Turn on floodgate that stream NightOWL gas distributor.
o
Turn off induction box floodgate.
