10.2 Gas Anesthesia Unit
The gas anesthesia unit is designed to anesthesize rodents while measuring them in the
NightOWL. A version for 3 and 5 animals is available. The unit consists of the following mod-
ules:
o
Sample table with gas masks.
o
Vaporizer rack with flow meters.
o
Induction box (also called KnockOut box) to initiate the animal anesthesia.
o
Oxygen supply (medical oxygen).
o
Pressured air supply (compressor).
o
Vacuum controller with carbon filters.
Isofluran is used as anesthetic. Please observe the respective instructions when working with
Isofluran.
The vaporizer rack has to be cleaned and checked once a year, either by the manufacturer of
the vaporizer rack or by an authorized service partner.
Oxygen can be supplied from a gas bottle with pressure reducer or a central supply. An input
pressure of approx. 1-2 bar is required. The max. flow rate is about 3 liters per minute at full ca-
pacity of the system. The tubing consists of a special oxygen tube with an inner diameter of
6mm. This tube must be connected to the pressure reducer or the central supply. An appropri-
ate adapter must be provided.
The remaining anesthetic is filtered from the exhaled air by activated carbon filters. This filtering
does not work anymore if the filters are saturated. For this reason, a third safety filter is installed
at the outlet to prevent this.
New filters have to be weighted in any case and their empty weight has to be noted on the filter.
If the weight of the filter increases by 50 g, it is saturated and has to be replaced .
The safety filter should also be checked from time to time (re-weigh it).

The compressor is designed to operate only 15 minutes followed by pausing 15 minutes. In
normal operation this is given. Do not operate the compressor longer than 15 minutes without
interruption.
