This c hapter provides inform ation on how to im prove the printer’s perform anc e by

This printer us es “s m art im aging” to im age and print fields on s upplies . Sm art im aging rem em bers
the exac t boundaries and loc ations of eac h field and plac es a boundary box (white s pac e) around
eac h field. W hen a field c hanges that partic ular boundary box is c leared and the new field data is
im aged. However, the new field data m ay require a larger boundary box than the previous field
did. In s om e c as es , neighboring fields that do not c hange m ay be c overed with white s pac e from
the c hanging field’s boundary box. To prevent exis ting fields from being c overed by a c hanging
field, s ee “Us ing Option 61 (Reim age Field)” in Chapter 4.
Note : Sm art im aging is autom atic ally dis abled on form ats with a Data Matrix bar c ode.

Many fac tors affec t print quality: type of s upplies , print s peed, print c ontras t, and the type of
printer’s applic ation. This printer s upports both therm al trans fer and therm al direc t s upplies . The
type of s upply s hould m atc h the printer’s applic ation.

To print at high s peeds , us e prem ium s upplies . Us ing prem ium s upplies reduc es s m udged
im ages , hard to read labels , and faded print. Supply type, print s peed, and print c ontras t work
together to im prove the print quality of labels . Contac t your Sales Repres entative for m ore
inform ation.

Selec t the print s peed bas ed on des ired throughput and print quality. If print quality is m ore
im portant, reduc e the print s peed, bec aus e a lower print s peed inc reas es the print quality of
labels . If throughput is m ore im portant, inc reas e the print s peed. See “Inc reas ing Throughput”
for m ore inform ation.

If the print quality is too light or too dark, adjus t the print c ontras t. The c orrec t c ontras t s etting
is im portant bec aus e it effec ts how well the bar c odes s c an and how long the printhead las ts .
Solid blac k print c annot exc eed 30% of any given s quare inc h of the s upply.
Chec k the print quality of bar c odes with a bar c ode verifier or s c anner. If you do not have a bar
c ode verifier or s c anner, c hec k the bar c ode vis ually. A bar c ode that is
IN SPEC will have
c om plete bars and c lear s pac es . Sm all alphanum eric c harac ters will look c om plete. A bar c ode
that is
IN SPEC m ay not look as good as one that is too dark, but it will have the highes t s c an
rate.
Note : For highes t s c an rates , m ake s ure there is adequate white s pac e before and after the bar
c ode. Als o, a darker bar c ode does not m ean it will s c an better.
