O ve rv iew o f B i tmapped Im ages
A printed im age is form ed through a s eries of dots . Eac h s quare on the
grid below repres ents a dot on the printhead. The graphic im age is
c reated by blac kening dots in a s pec ific pattern. Print s hades of gray
ac c ording to the c onc entration of dots on the im age. W hen the dots are
printed together, the end res ult is a graphic im age.
Determining a Method
Us e one of two m ethods to m ap out the graphic im age:
He x M e thod
The dot s equenc es are s egm ented into binary num bers and then
c onverted to hex num bers .
A graphic us ing gray-s c aling, s everal s lanted lines , or s everal vertic al
lines typic ally trans lates m ore effic iently with hex repres entation.
Run Le ngth
Encoding M e thod
The dot s equenc es are s egm ented into blac k and white s trings within
a row. The total c ount of eac h white s tring is c onverted to a lower-
c as e letter, c orres ponding to num eric value. The total c ount of eac h
blac k s tring is c onverted to an upperc as e letter, c orres ponding to
num eric value. This m ethod c an reduc e im aging tim e for graphic s that
c ontain repetitive rows of dots . A graphic with horiz ontal lines or very
few white-to-blac k borders typic ally trans lates m ore effic iently with run
length enc oding.
The m os t effic ient enc oding m ethod depends on how c om plic ated the graphic im age is and
whether or not im aging tim e is a c onc ern. Experim ent with both enc oding m ethods to get optim al
perform anc e.
