Starter Housing
Assembly
Refer to Figure 4.
Wear safety glasses and gloves while in-
stalling the recoil spring.
1. Install the recoil spring (A, Figure 9) as follows:
a. Lubricate the rewind spring and the cavity of the
starter housing with a low-temperature grease.
NOTE
Improper or
lubrication causes
parts of the rewind starter, including the
springs, to fail. Occasionally remove, clean
and lubricate the starter as apart of regular
maintenance.
b.
Hook the outer spring loop over the notch in the
housing as shown in Figure 12.
Wind the spring counterclockwise until the spring
is completely installed in the cavity of the housing.
The spring should lie flat in the housing.
Lubricate the starter post in the starter housing with
a
low temperature grease.
2. Attach the inner end of the starter rope to the sheave as
follows:
Be extremely careful when heating the recoil
rope. The hot melting rope and the flame
used to heat the rope can cause serious in-
a. Check the ends of the starter rope for fraying. To
tighten the end of the rope, apply heat to melt the
end (Figure 13).
Insert the end of the rope through the hole in the
sheave.
c.
Tie a knot in the end of the rope, then pull the rope
until the knot is tight in the pocket of the sheave
(Figure 14).
d. Lay the sheave on the workbench with the open end
up, then wind the rope counterclockwise (Figure
15)
tightly into the groove of the sheave.
NOTE
After
the rope is wound into the groove, ap-
50 cm (20 in.) should remain
free to install through the frame and body.
3.
Align the inner hook of the recoil spring (Figure 16)
with the notch in the sheave, then install the sheave. Twist
