WARNING
Never
reuse a piston seal
removing.
The
seal may leak due to damage or age de-
terioration.
10. Carefully install the new piston seals into the caliper
grooves. Make sure the seals seat evenly all the way
around the groove.
11. Coat the piston with DOT
4
brake fluid.
12.
Position the piston with the caliper bore so the open
end faces out. Push the piston evenly into the caliper bore.
Make sure the piston does not cock to one side during in-
stallation; push the piston in until it bottoms.
13.
Install the brake caliper assembly as described in this
chapter.
BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER
Refer to Figure 14.
1.
Position the vehicle on level ground and set the park-
ing brake.
2.
Disconnect the parking brake cable from the control
lever (A, Figure 15).
3.
Unscrew the brake lever pivot bolt nut
(A,
Figure

and washer. Remove the
switch
Then reinstall
the washer and nut to prevent loss.
CAUTION
Cover
area around the master
with
a
heavy cloth or plastic tarp to protect
it from accidental
fluid spills. Brake
fluid will damage painted or plastic sur-

soapy water and rinse completely.
4. Clean the top of the master cylinder of all dirt and de-
bris.
5. Remove the screws securing the cover (B, Figure
15).
Remove the cover and the diaphragm.
I f using a cooking
for this purpose,
DO
NOT reuse it for cooking purposes be-
cause there will be brake fluid residue
within
it.
6. Using a shop syringe, draw all the brake fluid out of the
master cylinder reservoir.
7. Place a shop cloth under the brake hose fitting to catch
any spilled brake fluid
leaks out.
8. Unscrew the fitting (Figure 17) securing the brake
hose to the master cylinder. Do not lose the sealing
washer. Tie the loose end of the hose up to the handlebar
and cover the end to prevent the entry of moisture and for-

bag.
NOTE
The parking
control lever components
will be loose when the clamp
is
removed in
the following step.
9. Remove the clamp bolts and washers securing the
master cylinder
(C, Figure 15) to the handlebar and re-
