CHAPTER THREE 

After performing throttle free play adjustment, check 

the oil pump 

adjustment as described in this section. 

Oil 

Pump Adjustment 

The  oil  pump  injects lubricating oil  into  the  engine. 

Throttle position determines the amount of oil  injected. 

Control  cable  adjustment  is  necessary  because  cables 

wear and stretch during normal  use. Incorrect cable ad- 
justment can cause too little or too much oil and cause en- 
gine seizure and poor performance. 

NOTE 

Before checking or adjusting the 

oil 

pump 

cable,  check 

and,  i f  necessary, 

adjust  the 

throttle 

free 

play. 

Check  the  oil  pump  cable  adjustment seasonally  or 

whenever the oil pump cable is disconnected or replaced. 
1.  Open the shroud and secure it in the open position. 

Pull back the cover on the oil pump cable 

(Figure 16). 

3.  Measure the  gap  (A, 

Figure  17)  between the  cable 

outer housing and adjuster 

(B). 

correct dimension is 

22-24 mm (0.87-0.94 in.). 
4. 

If the dimension  is incorrect, loosen the  jam nut (C. 

Figure 17) then rotate the adjuster (B). Tighten the jam 
nut after obtaining the correct dimension. 

5. 

Push the cover back into place on the adjuster. 

Fuel Filter 

Seasonally check the fuel filter located on the fuel in- 

take tube in the fuel tank as described below. 

Remove the fuel tank (Chapter Five). 

Inspect the fuel filter and if dirty or damaged, install a 

new filter. Make sure the filter is securely clamped to the 
intake tube. 
3.  Reinstall the fuel 

tank. 

Hose and Cable Inspection 

Check all hoses and cables monthly and seasonally for 

wear or damage. Also, check for proper routing. When in- 

stalling new hoses or when reconnecting hoses. make sure 
hose ends can bottom completely on their fittings. This al- 
lows proper installation of the hose clip, which prevents 
the hose from slipping or being pulled off. 

Steering Fastener Check 

Steering and ski alignment cannot be maintained with 

loose or missing fasteners. Check the steering assembly 

for  loose  or  missing  fasteners as  described  in  Chapter 
Thirteen. 

Steering Check 

After checking the steering bolts, cheek the steering as- 

sembly for proper play and adjustment. Perform the fol- 
lowing: 

1.  Support  the  snowmobile  so  the  skis  are  off  of  the 
ground. 

2.  Turn  the handlebars from  side  to  side. The  steering 
shaft  should  pivot  smoothly with  no  signs  of  binding, 

noise or other abnormal conditions, 

3.  If the steering is tight or  otherwise damaged, service 
the steering assembly as described in Chapter Thirteen. 
4. 

Seasonally or every 2000 miles, check steering toe-out 

and camber as described in Chapter Thirteen.

Runner Check 

Check  the  skis  for  cracks, bending  or  other signs  of 

damage. Raise the front of the snowmobile so the skis are 
off the ground. Check ski movement 

by 

pivoting both skis 

up  and  down. The  skis  should pivot smoothly with  no
