Oil
Injection System
This chapter covers complete oil injection system ser-
vice.
All models are equipped with the
oil
injection system (Figure 1). The system consists of a me-
chanical gear-driven pump (Figure 2, typical), external
oil tank (Figure
3, typical), hoses,
pump cable
assembly and a dash mounted low oil level warning light.
A junction box connects the throttle and pump cable so
they operate simultaneously. The oil pump, mounted on
the rear of the lower crankcase half, is driven by the cross
shaft connected to the crankshaft worm gear.
Oil injection systems can vary the amount of oil pro-
vided to the engine cylinders instantly and accurately for
optimum lubrication at any speed or engine load condi-
tion.
In contrast, engines without oil injection require that the
oil be mixed with the gasoline. The ratio of oil must be
sufficient for high-speed and load conditions.
OIL
PUMP SERVICE
Oil Pump Bleeding
The oil lines must always be filled with oil. If the oil
tank
ran dry, any oil injection hose was disconnected or
the machine was on its side; bleed air from the pump as
follows:
1. Remove the carburetors as described in Chapter Five.
Fuel
pump
Carburetors
2.
Check that all hoses are connected to the pump and to
the oil reservoir tank.
NOTE
is a large air space in a hose or
ter replacing a hose, fill that hose
with
the
same oil used in the reservoir tank (see
Chapter Three for oil
Reconnect the
hose
3.
Place a rag under the oil pump to catch oil
from the pump.
NOTE
4
shows the engine raised for clarity.
