Remove the cam guide (C, Figure 7) and spring
9.
Remove the sheave (Figure 8) and rope assembly from
the starter housing.
10. If
the rope, remove the rope from the
sheave.
Be careful
rewind spring
(A, Figure
has remained in the cavity of the housing,
because it
may unwind suddenly and vio-
lently,
serious
injury.
Wear safety
glasses and gloves while removing and in-
stalling the spring.

Place the rewind assembly housing on the floor with
closed side up. Tap lightly on the top of the housing
while holding it tightly against the floor and allow the
spring to fall from the housing. When the spring has un-
wound completely, pick up the spring.
Starter Housing
Inspection
NOTE
Before cleaning plastic components, make
sure the cleaning agent
is compatible with
plastic. Some types of solvents can
damage the plastic pieces.
Clean all parts thoroughly and allow to dry.

Visually check the starter post
(B, Figure 9) for cracks,
deep scoring and excessive wear. Check the grooves
in
the
post for damage. Replace the housing if the starter post is
damaged.
3. Inspect the pawl (Figure 10) and pawl spring for
cracks and other damage.
4. Inspect the sheave for cracks and damage.
5. Inspect the cam guide (Figure 11) and spring for
cracks and other damage.
6. Inspect the recoil spring
(A,
Figure
9) for any early
signs of damage. Breakage often occurs near the attach-
ment points at the ends of the spring. Install a new spring
if cracked or broken. Reshaping ends or similar repairs are
not recommended.
7. Inspect the starter rope for fraying, splitting or break-
age. Measure the length and diameter of the old rope to
determine the correct size replacement.
8.
If there is any doubt as to the condition of any part, re-
place it with
a new one.
