LUBRICATION, MAINTENANCE AND TUNE-UP

Be careful during carbon removal toprevent

NOTE 

Excessive carbon buildup over a short time 
may  indicate  an  improperly  adjusted  oil 
pump or poor quality oil. 

1.  Remove  the exhaust  system as described 

in 

Chapter 

Five. 
2.  Remove the cylinder head 

(Figure 34) as described in 

Chapter Four. 

3. 

Rotate the crankshaft so the piston is at top dead center, 

then remove carbon from  the piston crown. Repeat this 
procedure for the remaining pistons. 
4.  Rotate the crankshaft so the piston is below the exhaust 
port,  then remove carbon from the  exhaust port.  Use  a 
vacuum cleaner and remove any loose carbon from the ex- 
haust port and cylinder. Repeat this procedure for the re- 
maining cylinders. 

5. 

Remove carbon from the cylinder heads. 

6.  Remove carbon from the exhaust system as described 
in Chapter Five. 

7.  Wipe surfaces with a soft cloth moistened with solvent 
to remove any carbon residue. 

8. 

Reassemble the engine. 

UNSCHEDULED MAINTENANCE 

Check the following service items frequently and ser- 

vice as required. 

Engine Mounts and Fasteners 

Loose  engine  mount  bolts  cause  incorrect drive  belt 

alignment. Check the engine mounting bolts to make sure 
they  are  all  tight.  Refer to  Chapter Four.  If  the  engine 
mounts are loose, check the clutch alignment as described 

in Chapter Ten. 

Body Inspection 

Repair or replace damaged body panels. 

Body Fasteners 

Tighten any loose body bolts. Replace loose rivets 

first drilling out the old rivet and installing a new one. A 
pop-rivet tool and  an  assortment of  rivets are available 

through many hardware and auto parts stores. Follow the 
manufacturer's instructions for installing rivets. 

Check welded joints for cracks and damage. Damaged 

welded joints should be repaired by a competent welding 
shop. 

Fuel Tank and Lines 

Inspect  the  fuel 

tank  for  contamination,  cracks  and 

abrasions. 

If 

the fuel  tank  is contaminated, remove and 

clean it. If the tank is damaged and leaking, replace it. See 

Five. 

Oil Tank 

Inspect the oil tank for cracks, abrasions or leaks. Re- 

place the tank if its condition is in doubt. 

Electrical System 

Check all  the switches for  proper operation. Refer to 

Chapter Six.
