MICR
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. MICR allows a computer to
read characters printed in special metallic ink by scanning the
shapes of their magnetic fields. MICR fields are often imprinted
on bank checks before processing.
modem
Device that converts digital information into an analog signal
suitable for sending over analog telecommunication lines. Also
converts an analog signal from telecommunication lines into
digital information.
module
Cohesive unit within a program. It is consistent in its level and
identifiable in terms of loading or with other units.
mouse
A device for moving a cursor or other object around on the
display screen.
NLM
NLM refers to NetWare Loadable Module.
nascent
A job submission is being made, and the job has been
established; however the job data has not yet been received.
Netware
The networking software offered by Novell which may be run on
various platforms.
network
A system comprised of hardware and software which provides
for communication of data between connected devices. Also, a
system of interconnected computer workstations and servers.
network
architecture
The structure of a network system as defined by its network
topology and the network communication protocol (for example,
Novell, XNS, and AppleTalk).

protocol
The defined standard for the communication of data over a
network.
network
communication
utility
A software utility running on a workstation which provides the
ability to pass data over a network in a specific network
communications protocol. This utility is required when the
operating system on the workstation does not provide inherent
support for the network communication protocol required.
network
topography
The standard for the physical hardware (cables and interfaces)
and the fundamental structure (bus, ring, or star) of a network
system.
node
A device, such as a printer or a workstation, on an AppleTalk
network.
nonimpact printer
Printer that forms characters without any strikes of a key or
element against the paper.
object file
Source file converted into machine language (binary code).
