Operator Guide
frame
The unit of data within a packet whose specifications are defined
by the network architecture and network communications
protocol. See also packet
frame buffer
An internal representation of the image that is printed on the
page by the device. The frame buffer collects and stores pixel
values for use by the laser printing device.
FSL
forms source library. Uncompiled collection of user created files
containing FDL commands. Refer to FDL; form.
FTP
File Transport Protocol. A network protocol layer for reliably
transferring files over a network, built upon TCP/IP.
function keys
Keyboard keys that produce no character but initiate a particular
machine function, such as delete.
fuse
To affix dry ink to paper by heat or pressure or a combination of
both.
fuser wrap
A printer fault condition in which a sheet of paper sticks to the
fuser roll and curls around it, causing a paper jam.
gateway
A network switching device that is used to connect incompatible
networks.
GCR
group code recording mode. Refers to the specific density of
data (such as 6250 bpi) as it is recorded on tape, which is
measured in bits per inch (bpi).
glyph
An identified abstract graphical symbol independent of any
actual image.
Graphical User
Interface (GUI)
The GUI is a means of input/output that allows users to interact
in a more intuitive and effective way. GUIs consist of windows,
icons, and pull-down or popup menus.
graphics
Use of lines and figures to display data, as opposed to using text.
gray scale
The image in which each picture element (pixel or dot) is defined
as a gray value as opposed to simply black or white. An image
file may contain different numbers of gray values depending on
its resolution. A halftone screen is applied to gray scale images
to prepare them for printing on devices that are capable of
printing only solid black dots.
grid
Imaginary pattern of evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines
on a page.
grid unit
Smallest rectangle enclosed by horizontal and vertical lines on a
grid. The size of a grid unit is expressed as the length of one side
of a rectangle.
