HPSA-7100-R Series Installation and User Manual
P/N P01- 04946 Rev C
Department of Defense Unified Facility Criteria (UFC 4-021-01)
According to the UFC Design and O&M Mass Notification Systems, minimum mounting
height of the speakers shall be based on the rated output of the speakers and shall prevent
hearing damage to anyone directly below the speakers. The height shall not be less than 30
ft (9 m) or greater than 60 ft (18 m) above ground level. Ensure the location and height of
the HPSA-7100-R supporting structures do not interfere with aircraft flight operations.
FEMA Outdoor Warning Systems Technical Bulletin
The minimum mounting height must be based on ANSI S12.14 testing results. The
minimum mounting height is typically 35 ft to 50 ft (10.67 m to 15.24 m) above the local
terrain and is based on the assumption that the device output centerline is in the horizontal
plane. This height and orientation ensures that 29 CFT 1910.95 noise exposure limits or
the Committee on Hearing, Bioacoustics, and Biomechanics (CHABA) of the National
Academy of Sciences recommended limit of 123 dB is not exceeded for anyone at ground
level in the immediate vicinity of the HPSA device.
The minimum mounting height must also ensure the device output is unobstructed by
barriers to sound such as trees, hillsides, or buildings. Buildings under construction or tree
growth that cannot be removed or cropped in the immediate vicinity below the device
mounting height will likely require that the HPSA device either be supplemented or
relocated. Finally, an outdoor HPSA device mounted on a hillside must also account for
the uphill slope to ensure adherence to minimum mounting height requirements.
2.6
DISTANCES BETWEEN HPSA AND SPEAKERS
When designing the location of the HPSA and Speakers, care should be taken to consider
the distance between the units. Appropriate cables and wires should be selected based on
distances between the HPSA and the Speakers, along with the AC Power Source.
Among other things, signal quality and strength are affected by the following:
•
Cable type (material, diameter, loss/attenuation per foot)
•
Gauge of the wire or size of cable
Refer to Appendix C for additional information regrading speaker wire gauge and
distances.
Recommended wiring distance between the HPSA Electronics
Enclosure and Speakers is 100 ft. max. Each Speaker should have a
separate cable run.
