engines, the key must be removed. If there is more than one key, you should tag
the ignition. On units driven by electric motors, the main disconnect must be
locked out according to applicable standards.
8.36
Never operate the boom “blind.” If you can’t see the point of
placement, you must establish a system of communications with the workmen
who can see the point of placement. Arrange for radio communications, a system
of visual or auditory signals (lights or bells), or a signalperson. If a signalperson is
used,
agree on hand signals before beginning the pour!
(The ACPA recom-
mended hand signals are shown on page 82 of this book.) If the boom will be
moved extensively, arrange for a workman to stay with the pump and put yourself
in a position to see the end of the boom (Figure 58).
8.37
Always block the discharge end when you must swing a full
boom over workers or property (when you are not pumping). You must stop con-
crete from falling out of the boom. This can be done with a shutoff valve, or by
removing the hose and putting a blanking plug on the last elbow (Figure 59), or by
kinking the end hose and securing it in the kinked position. Please note— hoses
that can be easily kinked may not be strong enough to withstand the pressure of
the pump. Verify the working pressure of the hose against the maximum pressure
of the pump before using this type of hose.
