Flying the Boom and Power Pack
Do not perform this procedure with-
out complete understanding of the
warnings in these instructions and on
decals.
Requirements for flying the boom:
• At least two men, one of whom will act as a
spotter
• Four cables, chains or straps, with a working load
limit of at least 20,000 pounds. The cables must
be long enough to create an angle of at least 45˚
and not more than 60˚ from the hook to the lift
rings. If the angle is too small, it will put exces-
sive stress on the cables, and if the angle is too
large the weight of the load may be uneven. For
specific information about proper rigging angles,
contact the local rigging company in your area.
• A crane rated to lift your maximum load at the
required extension
• A 3 pound hammer
• A pin driver, which is about the same diameter as
the tapered end of the main support bolts
• A pry bar over 3 feet long
• A wood block 6 to 8 inches high, no longer than
the width of the boom cradle
• A tag rope at least 20 feet long (two would be
better)
Removing boom from truck:
When removing the boom from the truck, it is important
to remember a few simple steps to prevent personal
injury and/or damage to the truck cab or boom:
1. Jack at least one outrigger to stabilize the truck.
2. Raise the boom, and insert the 6 to 8 inch wood
block onto the rear boom cradle; then bring the
boom back to rest on the block of wood.
Falling hazard! Never climb on the
boom or in the walkway without se-
curing yourself from falling by tying
off.
