Using Pings
Instant Internet provides a background ping facility that you can use to monitor
and control the connection state of a VPN and serve as a “keep-alive” for the
tunnel. You use control when you want to maintain a permanent connection. You
typically use monitor with a dial-up connection when you do not want to keep the
connection active but you still want to check the status of a tunnel.
The following capabilities are available for the Ping command:
•
All Modes – For all modes of ping, the destination address, interval, and
timeout can be specified. The destination should be chosen as some device
that is reachable and for which a response is representative of the desired
connectivity.
For example, if the purpose of the ping is to validate a VPN connection, then
it is best to choose a destination that is reached through the VPN tunnel, if
possible, such as the private address of the remote Instant Internet or
Contivity.
— Length – This box is normally left blank so that the shortest possible
packet is used.
— Interval – Specifies the number of seconds between ping attempts. The
default is 1 second.
— Timeout – Specifies the number of seconds that are allowed for a
response. The default is 5 seconds.
