Using a DMZ
A Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a network segment that is separate from your
internal network and usually contains publicly accessible servers. The devices on
a DMZ often have publicly announced IP addresses and require less security than
your internal network. Segmenting your Web, FTP, e-mail or DNS servers in a
DMZ allows you to host your own Internet services but keep your internal
network secure.
You may use Instant Internet for a DMZ in one of two ways:
•
With a single server or a hub connected to an additional Ethernet connector
such as the second Ethernet connector (Eth2) on the back of the Instant
Internet 100-S or 400-S.
•
With each individual server connected to a port on the seven port switch on
the front of the Instant Internet 100-S or 400-S unit. The primary benefit of
using the switch for your DMZ is to isolate data traffic from one server to
another and to eliminate the requirement for a separate hub.
