IDE Device Configuration
The system is shipped with default as “Auto Configured” selected in this submenu. The
system then automatically detects the hard disk type and sets the remaining parameters.
If your IDE hard disk does not features auto IDE type detection or your IDE hard disk was
formatted on another system with parameters different than those reported by the drive, you
need to select “User Definable,” and set the “Number of Cylinders,” “Number of
Heads,”and “Number of Sectors.”
Maximum Capacity
The hard disk maximum capacity value is calculated from the cylinder, head, and sector
information in the Hard Disk Type.
IDE Translation Mode
The IDE Translation Mode parameter controls the way in which the BIOS interacts with
the drive in terms of drive geometry. Proper choice is dependent upon the drive’s size,
capabilities, and the operating system (OS) used. The following choices are available.
n
Standard CHS (cylinder head sector)
−
is the translation mode that has been in use
for years. Its use limits IDE capacity to a maximum of 528 MB regardless of the
size of the drive used.
n
Logical Block
−
mode overcomes the 528 MB maximum size limitations imposed
by the Standard CHS mode. It should be used only when the drive supports
logical block addressing (LBA), and the OS supports LBA, or uses the BIOS to
access the disk.
