5-6 Using NEC Utilities and Drivers
If you have access to a modem, you can obtain additional
VGA drivers for a variety of software applications through
the NEC Bulletin Board Service (see “NEC Bulletin Board
Service” in Chapter 9).
BIOS UPDATE UTILITY
The system BIOS resides on a flash ROM in your system.
You can update the ROM BIOS, should it ever become
necessary. This feature allows the ROM BIOS chip to be
“flashed” with a new BIOS code through software, rather
than requiring you to replace the chip.
To perform a BIOS update, you need a BIOS flash diskette.
The diskette, which contains the latest version of the BIOS
code, can be obtained through NEC Technologies, Inc. (See
Chapter 9 for the NEC telephone number to call to obtain
the diskette.)
If you have access to a modem, check the NEC Bulletin
Board Service for available updates to your system BIOS.
See “NEC Bulletin Board Service” in Chapter 9 for infor-
mation about using the bulletin board (U.S. and Canada
only).
Using the Update Utility
Use the following steps to update the BIOS from the BIOS
flash diskette.
1.
Write down the Setup parameters currently set on your
system (see Setup in Chapter 3).
2.
Insert the flash diskette in drive A.
3.
Cold boot the system.
4.
At the flash upgrade Main Menu, use the arrow keys to
select “Install new BIOS” and press
Enter.
