The electric parking brake is applied if the trans‐
mission is in position

ing conditions is fulfilled:

The engine is switched off.
R
The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the
seat belt buckle and the driver's door is
opened.

To prevent application: pull the handle of the
electric parking brake.
The electric parking brake is also applied if one
of the following conditions is fulfilled:
R
Distance Pilot DISTRONIC brings the vehicle
to a standstill.
R
The HOLD function is keeping the vehicle sta‐
tionary.
R
Parking Pilot is keeping the vehicle station‐
ary.
In addition, one of the following conditions must
be fulfilled:
R
The engine is switched off.
R
The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the
seat belt buckle and the driver's door is
opened.
R
There is a system malfunction.
R
The power supply is insufficient.
R
The vehicle is stationary for a lengthy period.
When the electric parking brake is applied, the
F
(USA) or
!
(Canada) indicator lamp
lights up in the instrument cluster.
The electric parking brake is not automatically
engaged if the engine is switched off by the ECO
start/stop function.
Releasing the electric parking brake auto‐
matically
The electric parking brake is released when all of
the following conditions are fulfilled:
R
The engine is running.
R
The seat belt tongue is inserted into the seat
belt buckle.
R
The transmission is in position

or
k
and
you depress the accelerator pedal or you
shift from transmission position
j
to
h
or
k
.
R
If the transmission is in position
k
, the
trunk lid must be closed.
If the seat belt tongue is not inserted into the
seat belt buckle, the following conditions must
be fulfilled:
R
The driver's door is closed.
R
You move the transmission out of transmis‐
sion position

or you have previously
driven faster than 2 mph (3 km/h).

If the transmission is in position
k
, the
trunk lid must be closed.
If the electric parking brake is released, the

(USA) or

(CANADA) indicator lamp in
the instrument cluster goes out.
