Leica M525 F20/CT20 / Ref. 10 715 156 / Version 01 27
8 Operation
Leave the illumination on for at least 5 minutes, as
otherwise luminosity will decrease rapidly.

Adjusting the brightness
Brightness can be increased or decreased using the touch panel
monitor or a handswitch/footswitch or CAN handle.
On the touch panel monitor:

Press the "+" or "-" button on the bar for adjusting the
brightness (1) of the illumination.
or

Press the brightness adjustment bar (1) directly.
The brightness of the active main illuminator changes.
• Clicking the "+" or "–" button changes the brightness
value in increments of 1. Holding down the button with
your finger changes the value in increments of 5.
• The start value can be saved individually for each user.
• The brightness setting is also visible when the illumination
is switched off. However, the brightness display bar
appears darker.
On the handswitch/footswitch/CAN handle:
Depending on the assignment (see page 35), you can also
increase and decrease the brightness of the main illuminator using
two correspondingly assigned buttons on the handswitch/
footswitch/handle.
BrightCare™
On the touch panel monitor, you can enable or disable the
BrightCare™ function using the button (2).
BrightCare™ is a safety function that automatically limits the
maximum brightness depending on the working distance.
Excessively bright light can, in combination with a short working
distance, cause burns in patients.
Explanation of luminous energy:
The optics of the Leica M525 F20/CT20 surgical microscope have a
variable working distance of between 207 and 470 mm. The system
is designed in such a way that it delivers sufficient light to produce
a bright image even at a long working distance of 470 mm.
In accordance with the formula E
v
=I
v

, the light quantity
continuously increases by 510 % while the working distance is
being changed from 470 to 207 mm. (Ev = light intensity, Iv=
brightness, d= distance from light source).
This means that less light is required to work with the microscope
at a shorter distance than at a greater distance.
It is advisable to begin with a low output of the light source and
increase the light intensity until an optimum level of illumination is
achieved.
When shipped from the factory, the "BrightCare Plus" safety
function is activated for all users.
Explanation of heat development:
From the light of the xenon light source used, heat of invisible light
(over 700 nm) is filtered out. Nevertheless, white light also always
develops heat. An excessive amount of white light can lead to
overheating of tissue and metal objects.
Therefore, it is advisable to begin with a low output of the light
source and increase this until an optimum level of illumination is
achieved.
