Chapter 6 Transfer Ribbon Mechanism
6.3
Ribbon Rewind
Unit
Description
The ribbon rewind unit consists of a spool on a shaft running
through a bearing pressed into the centre-line wall. The shaft is
driven via a tooth belt from the stepper motor (see chapter 7.4). The
tooth belt pulley attached to the shaft has a one-way clutch, so the
ribbon will not go the wrong way when the stepper motor is
reversed.
On the outer side of the centre-line wall is a spring brake similar (not
identical!) to the one in the ribbon unwind unit, plus a disc that is
pressed against the centre-line wall by three small springs fitted in
the holes labelled “R” in the disk brake. These two breaks allow the
spool to be rotated manually to facilitate ribbon load and still
prevent breaking the ribbon or causing motor overload if the ribbon
should get jammed.
A leaf spring on the spool is used to engage the ribbon core.
Note that many parts are identical in the ribbon unwind unit, the
ribbon rewind unit and the media take-up unit.
