Chapter 11 CPU Board
11.5 Boot Restore
Firmware (software and resident fonts) can be upgraded using 1 or
2 PCMCIA cards, which may contain either printer software
updates or fonts
1
. In either case, use the following procedure:
• Print out a test label, which will contain all your printer settings
as these will be lost during a font upgrade
2
.
• Switch off the printer.
• If the printer is fitted with an optional paper cutter, see chapter
12, disconnect the cable from the cutter to the cutter interface
connector on the printer's front. If not, the cutter will keep on
cutting while the firmware is being updated (firmware
≤
1.08 ).
• Insert the card in either slot with its top facing the ON/OFF
switch.
• Switch on the printer. The data on the card is copied to the
printer's flash memory.
The Power LED should go through the following sequence,
which takes about 30 seconds..
- Flash amber
- Continuous amber
- Flash amber
- Continuous amber
- Green
• Switch off the printer.
• Remove the card.
• Insert the next card, if necessary, and repeat steps 4 – 6.
• Switch on the printer.
• Enter the settings shown on the test label you printed earlier .
• Reset the printhead resistance setting using the command:
?HEAD(-1)
If the power should be turned off or if a power failure occurs during
upgrading, the boot sector will be lost and the printer will refuse to
work. The same may happen when installing an uninitiated replace-
ment CPU board. There is a simply remedy for this condition:
• Turn off the power.
• Open the electronics compartment as described in chapter 10.1.
• Move both straps fitted on J1 from left and centre pins to the
centre and right pins.
• Insert a boot restore card in the card1 slot (i.e. the right-hand slot
when viewing the printer from behind, see chapter 11.6).
• Turn on the power.
• The LED control lamp will turn amber (alternating between
steady and flashing).
• When the LED control lamp turns green, the upgrading is
completed. Do not turn off the power while the upgrading is in
process.
• Turn off the power.
• Remove the boot restore card.
• Put back both straps on J1 in their original positions, i.e. on the
left and centre pins.
• Put back the electrics cover.
• Install new firmware and fonts as described in chapter 11.4.
11.4 Firmware Update
1
/.
This chapter refers to cards containing
fonts which will be loaded into the
printer's flash memory. Font cartridges
which are permanently fitted in the
printer are not covered.
2
/.
You cannot save your settings to a text
file and use it later when you upgrade
fonts, since all your files are lost and the
printer settings are reset to factory
defaults during the upgrade. This does
not apply to upgrading of the firmware.
WARNING!
Do not switch off the printer until
the upgrading is completed
and the Power LED shines green!
