The Compella™ Bariatric Bed System is intended to provide patient support in health care environments 

and may be used in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, acute care, including critical care, 

step down/progressive care, medical/surgical, high acuity sub-acute care, post anesthesia care unit 

(PACU), and sections of the emergency department (ED). It is capable of being used with a broad patient 

population as determined appropriate by the caregiver or institution and is intended for patients 

between 113 kg and 454 kg (250 lb and 1000 lb).

The intended users of the Compella™ Bariatric Bed System are professional healthcare employees who 

have the physical strength and cognitive skills to operate and control the bed. Follow facility safety 

protocols if a patient does not have the physical strength or cognitive skills to operate and control the 

bed.

The Compella™ Bed System with Therapy Support Surface may additionally be used to assist in 

treatment or prevention of pulmonary or other complications associated with immobility, to assist in 

treatment or prevention of pressure injuries, or for any other use where medical benefits may be 

derived from Continuous Lateral Rotation Therapy.

CONTRAINDICATION:

Contraindication

—Use of powered air surfaces for patients with unstabilized spinal cord injury could 

cause serious injury to the patient.

CONTRAINDICATION:

Contraindication—

Use of continuous lateral rotation therapy is contraindicated for patients with 

cervical or skeletal traction.

WARNING:

Warning

—Do 

not 

use the Compella™ Bariatric Bed System with patients who weigh less than 113 kg 

(250 lb) or more than 454 kg (1000 lb). Patient injury and/or equipment damage could occur.

INTRODUCTION

This manual contains information necessary for normal operation of the Compella™ Bariatric Bed, 
Compella™ Therapy Surface, and Compella™ Foam Surface from Hill-Rom. Before you operate the bed, 
make sure you read and understand in detail the contents of this manual. It is important that you read 
and obey the aspects of safety contained in this manual. 

Any reference to a side of the bed is from the patient’s view lying in the bed on his or her back.

The bed is equipped with a scale intended to weigh the patient in the bed.
