1. NLG and MLG Tires - General Visual Inspection
A. General
(1) This task gives the procedure to do an inspection of the tires of the NLG
(Nose Landing Gear) and MLG (Main Landing Gear). This inspection is
avisual examination of the tires for wear, damage, and general condition.
(2) When you must replace a tire, before you disassemble the wheel assem-
bly, make a mark with a chalk in the damaged area.
B. Job Set-Up
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE AIRCRAFT IS IN A SAFE
CONDITION BEFORE YOU DO THE MAINTENANCE
PROCEDURES. THIS IS TO PREVENT INJURY TO
PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
(1) Install the landing-gear safety pins (GHSH TASK 32-00-00-910-801-A/200).
C. Nose and Main Wheel Tire - Inspection (Figure 201)
WARNING: DO NOT GO NEAR HOT TIRES INSTALLED ON THE
AIRCRAFT. IF IT IS NECESSARY TO MEASURE THE TIRE
TEMPERATURE, GO NEAR THE TIRE FROM ITS FRONT,
NOT FROM ITS SIDE. HIGH TEMPERATURE CAN CAUSE
TIRE EXPLOSION.
(1) Examine the tires of the NLG and MLG. Replace the wheel if you find on a
tire one or more of the conditions that follow:
(a) Cut into the casing plies.
(b) For NLG tires, damage, cut, or wear on the chine.
(c) Cut across the tread rib to the fabric.
(d) Rib undercutting.
(e) Tread worn, with top fabric worn through for more than 1/8 of the cir-
cumference of the tire or more than 1 in. (25 mm) wide.
NOTE:
Tires within these limits can continue in service no longer
than necessary to be replaced. Tires worn beyond this limit
may be unsafe.
NOTE:
• For MLG, 1/8 of circumference of the tire is equal to 9.8 in.
(250 mm).
•For NLG, 1/8 of circumference of the tire is equal to 5.9
in. (150 mm).
(f) Tread or sidewall bulge.
(g) Peeled rib.
(h) Thrown tread.
(i) Open tread splice.
