3.7.2 DMZ
DMZ stands for “Demilitarized Zone”. It is an IP address on the private network of the Residential
Gateway. But it is exposed to the Internet for special-purpose services. So a host on the private
network can be assigned the IP address of the DMZ to provide services to the hosts on the
Internet. The network administrator should be cautious of adopting DMZ. If a host is on DMZ, it is
not protected by the firewall. And the Residential Gateway will open all ports to expose DMZ to the
Internet. This may expose the local network to a variety of security risk.
