3.4 Production of Specimen
Adequate pretreatment is needed according to specimen properties before specimen
observation.
3.4.1 Checklist before Specimen Preparation
You should check the followings first when preparing specimens.
1) Identify the specimen types and carry out the pretreatment for specimen accordingly.
metal specimens, high molecule specimens, semiconductor specimens and biologic
specimens
2) Identify the purpose of specimen observation and select the analysis method serving for
the purpose.
surface analysis, cross section analysis, BSE analysis, and EDS analysis
specimen production according to observation purpose
3) In order to prevent damages that may occur on specimen/equipment when you observe
specimens with SEM, check the specimen properties.
Is it heat-resistant?
Is it magnetic?
Is it conductive or nonconductive?
How big is it?
3.4.2 Material Preparation
Users can cut the material or it can be used as it is if it is small.
1. When taking pictures with standard specimens
If you want to demonstrate the operation of equipment without materials, standard
specimens are needed.
You can purchase standard specimen at stores or specialized internet sites.
The size of standard specimen is 25X25um (length X breadth). This specimen is so thin
that it can be bent easily. Therefore, take it out carefully with tweezers and adhere it to
Stub plate and then take a photo of it.
