7. Remove rem a in in g bearings (except front and
rear) in the same m anner. It will be necessary to index
pilot in c a m sh a ft rear b e a rin g to remove the rear
in te rm e d ia te bearing.
8. Assemble rem over and installer tool on driver
han d le an d r e m o te c am sh aft fro n t and re a r bearings by
driving towards center o f cylinder block (fig. 6A-45).
Installation
N O T E : The cam shaft fro n t and rear bearings
should be installed first. These bearings will act as
guides for the pilot and center the rem ain in g
bearings being pulled into place.
1. Assemble rem over and installer tool on driver
han d le and install c a m sh a ft fro n t and re a r bearings by
driving towards center o f cylinder block (fig. 6A-45).
2. U sing Tool Set J-6098, with nut and thrust
w a sh e r installed to end o f threads, index pilot in
c a m s h a ft fro n t bearings an d install puller screw through
pilot.
3. Index ca m sh a ft b e a rin g in bore, then install
rem over an d installer tool on puller screw with shoulder
tow ard bearing.
CAUTION: A ll cam bearing oil holes m ust be
aligned with oil holes in cam bore.
4. U sin g two wrenches, hold puller screw while
tu rn in g nut. A fter bearing has been pulled into bore,
rem ove the rem over and installer tool from puller screw
a n d check alignm ent o f oil hole in ca m sh a ft bearing.
5. Install re m a in in g bearings in the same m anner.
It will be necessary to index pilot in the cam sh aft rear
b e a rin g to install the re a r interm ediate bearing.
6. Install a new c am sh aft re a r plug.
N O T E : Plug should be installed flush to 1/32"
deep and be parallel with re a r surface o f cylinder
block.
OIL PAN
Removal
1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist and drain engine oil.
3. Rem ove starter.
4. Rem ove flywheel splash shield or converter
housing u n d e rp a n , as applicable.
5. R em ove " th r o u g h " bolts from engine front
mounts.
6. Raise front o f engine, reinstall m ount through
bolts and lower engine.
7. Remove oil p a n bolts.
8. Remove oil pan.
Installation
1. T horo u g h ly clean all gasket sealing surfaces.
2. U sing a new gasket, install re a r seal in rear
m a in b earin g cap.
3. Install fro n t seal on crankcase front cover,
pressing tips into holes provided in cover (fig. 6A-46).

4. Install side gaskets to engine block, using a
gasket sealer with sufficient body to act as a retainer.
5. Install oil pan, torquing the retaining bolts to
specifications.
6. Raise engine sufficiently to allow removal of
" th r o u g h " bolts - lower engine and install mount
" th ro u g h " bolts. Torque bolts to specifications.
7. Install flywheel splash shield o r converter
housing u n derpan, as applicable.
8. Install starter.
9. Lower vehicle and fill crankcase with oil.
10. Connect battery negative cable, start engine
and check for leaks.
OIL PUMP
Removal
1. Remove oil pan as outlined.
2. Remove two flange m ounting bolts, pickup pipe
bolt, then remove pu m p and screen as an assembly.
Disassembly
1. Remove the pu m p cover attaching screws, the
pu m p cover and the p u m p cover gasket (fig. 6A-47).
N O T E : M ark g ear teeth so th ey m ay be
reassembled with the same teeth indexing.
2. Remove the idler gear and the drive g ear and
shaft from the pum p body.
3. Remove the pressure regulator valve retaining
pin, pressure regulator valve and related parts.
