universal jo in t yoke.
b.
Install the steering g ear to fra m e bolts and
torque to specifications.
c.
Install the universal jo in t pinch bolt and
torque to specification.
N O TE: T h e pinch bolt must pass through the shaft
undercut.
3.
Install the p itm a n arm onto the p itm an shaft,
lining up the m arks m ade at removal. Install the p itm a n
sh aft nut o r p itm a n arm pinch bolt and torque to
specifications.
CAUTION:
I f a clamp type p itm an arm is used,
spread the p itm an arm ju s t enough, with a
wedge, to slip the arm onto the p itm a n shaft.
Do not spread the clamp more than required to
slip over pitm a n arm onto the p itm an shaft. Be
sure to install the hardened steel washer before
installing the nut.
P itm an S h aft Seal R ep lacem en t
M a n u a l Steering Gear
A faulty seal m ay be replaced without removal o f
steering gear from C, G and P trucks by rem oving
p itm a n
arm
as outlined
u nder
M aintenance
and
Adjustm ens - Steering G e a r A djustm ents and proceed as
follows:
N O T E : O n K series vehicles remove the gear from
the vehicle first.
1.
Rotate the steering wheel from stop to stop,
counting the total n u m b e r o f turns. T hen turn back
exactly half-way, placing the g ear on center (the
w o rm s h a ft flat should be at the 12 o ’clock position).
2.
Remove the three self-locking bolts attaching
side cover to the housing and lift the pitm an shaft and
side cover assembly from the housing.
3.
Pry the p itm a n sh aft seal from the gear housing
using a screwdriver and being careful not to d am ag e the
housing bore.
CAUTION:
Inspect the lubricant in the gear fo r
contam ination I f the lubricant is contam inated
in any way, the gear m ust be removed fr o m the
vehicle a n d completely overhauled as outlined
in the O verhaul M anual.
4.
Coat the new p itm a n sh a ft seal with Steering
G e a r L u b rican t m eeting G M Specification GM 4673M
(or equivalent). Position the seal in the pitm an shaft
bore and tap into position using a suitable size socket.
5.
Remove the lash adjuster lock nut. Remove the
side cover from the pitm an sh aft assembly by turning
the lash adjuster screw clockwise.
6.
Place the p itm a n sh aft in the steering gear such
th at the center tooth o f the p itm a n shaft sector enters the
center tooth space o f the ball nut.
7.
Fill the steering gear housing with Steering
G e a r L u b rican t m eeting G M Specification G M 4673M
(or equivalent).
8.
Install a new side cover gasket onto the gear
housing.
9.
Install the side cover onto the lash adjuster
screw by reaching through the th readed hole in the side
cover with a small screwdriver and turning the lash
adjuster screw counter- clockwise until it bottoms and
turns back in 1 / 4 turn.
10.
Install the side cover bolts and torque to
specifications.
11.
Install the lash adjuster screw locknut, p e rform
steerin gear adjustm ent and install the p itm a n arm as
outllined und er " M a in te n a n c e and Adjustm ents".
NOTE: On K series install the gear into the vehicle
using previously outlined procedure.
Directional Signal Switch
The directional signal switch can be removed with
the steering column in the vehicle and without disturbing
any o f the column mountings.
C and K Series
Removal
1.
Remove the steering wheel as outlined under
"S ^.ering Wheel - Rem oval".
2.
Remove the column to instrum ent panel trim
cover.
3.
Position screwdriver blade into cover slot. Pry
up and out to free cover from lock plate.
4.
Screw the center post o f Lock Plate Com pressing
Tool J-23653 onto the steering sh aft as fa r as it will go.
Compress the lock plate by turning the center post nut
clockwise (fig. 3B-51). Pry the round wire snap ring out
o f the shaft groove and discard the ring. Remove Tool
J-23653 and lift the lock plate off the end o f the shaft.
CAUTION:
I f the column is being disassembled
on the bench, with the snap ring rem oved the
shaft could slide out o f the lower end o f the
m ast ja cket, dam aging the sh a ft assembly.
5.
Slide the directional signal cancelling cam,
