Power Supply Sizing
The power supply should be sized base on the peak current that the motor can draw during a move. This value
is programmable through the Peak Torque Limit and has a maximum value of 13.0 amps. The SV160E2 has a
torque constant of 0.124 Nm/A. Dividing the programmed Peak Torque Limit by torque constant will result
in the peak current drawn by the motor.
Even with a properly sized supply, it is important to choose a supply with the proper over-current protection.
You should choose a supply whose protection circuitry results in a constant current control. In over-current
situations, the power supply becomes a constant current supply, lowering the output voltage to keep the cur-
rent within limits. This protection scheme allows you to maintain control of the motor. The other over-current
protection is commonly referred to as “hiccup mode”. These power supplies briefly reset if the current limit is
exceeded. This results in loss of output voltage and motor control.
