Fiber Cable Testing Overview
Introduction
The Fiber SmartProbe
+
for the WireScope 350 simplify installation testing in
mixed twisted pair and fiber optic installations. Testing of both multimode and
singlemode optical fiber is supported by the Fiber SmartProbe
+
family of
products. Simply attach the Fiber SmartProbe
+
to the SmartProbe port of the
WireScope 350 and the unit becomes a high performance optical fiber power
meter and loss meter. When the Fiber SmartProbe
+
is used the physical length
and propagation delay of a fiber optic pair is measured. Fiber optic test results
are stored in the WireScope 350’s tests database and can be uploaded to a
Windows-based PC via the same ScopeData Pro software used to manage
twisted pair test results.
Getting Started
The Fiber SmartProbe
+
product line consists of a family of fiber optic test
probes, each of which can function as both a transmitter and a detector. LED
based Fiber SmartProbes
+
support both 850nm and 1300nm wavelengths for
qualifying multimode fiber. Singlemode fiber is qualified by using the laser
based 1310nm and 1550nm Fiber SmartProbes
+
. This architecture supports both
Single Ended and Double Ended measurements and allows multiple
combinations of Fiber SmartProbes
+
to be used together for Double Ended
measurements.
Double Ended testing requires two Fiber SmartProbes
+
. Fibers can be tested
either in pairs or individually and can be up to 4 km long for multimode and 50
km for singlemode. When the two Fiber SmartProbes
+
are used in a pair for
Double Ended testing, a single Autotest can characterize a pair of fibers at two
different wavelengths.
