Bates numbering. The legal community uses a specialized type of
page numbering to identify pages of content with unique numbers.
Acrobat 9 lets you number pages across a set of files. See the sidebar
“Who Is Mr. Bates?” for a description of the Bates numbering system.
Add Bates numbers by following these steps:
1. Choose Advanced > Document Processing > Bates Numbering > Add
to open the Bates Numbering dialog.
2. Click the Add Files button, and choose either Add Files or Add Fold-
ers to open a Browse dialog. Locate and select the files you want to
include, and click Add Files to close the dialog and list the files in the
Bates Numbering dialog.
Tip
Click Output Options at the lower left of the dialog to open the Output Options
dialog. Here you can specify how to name the files—keep the original filename,
add a prefix or suffix, replace filenames with Bates numbers only, or overwrite
existing files. If you want to track the process, select “Create log file” and specify
a storage location. Click OK to return to the Bates Numbering dialog.

Who Is Mr. Bates?
Bates numbering is used in
the legal system for identify-
ing documents. The system is
named after the Bates auto-
matic numbering machine,
where an arbitrary unique
numeric or alphanumeric
identifier is generated for
each page of each docu-
ment used in a legal case.
The number is unique to the
documents disclosed or pro-
duced in a case, but there
isn’t a standardized algorithm
for determining the number.
