GSM basics
In this section, you will find a short introduction to GSM systems and several
overviews on important system parameters.
We will look at the following aspects of a GSM system:
–
“Anatomy of a GSM network”
– The structure and organisation of a GSM
network.
–
“Basic specifications of GSM bands”
– a short table summarising the key
specifications of the various GSM bands.
–
“Time slots and bursts”
– Here you will find more about the key GSM
element: the time slot.
–
“Signaling”
– We’ve tried to translate a signaling table into ‘normal’
language to make it more easy to understand...
–
“Technical requirements and parameters tested”
– this page will introduce
you to the reasons for testing specific functions and meaning of certain
parameters.
–
“Coding of MCC and MNC”
– This section provides you with a number of
examples regarding the coding of the MNC and MCC.
–
“Power control levels and tolerances”
– These tables give all the information
on the power control levels and the related tolerances for the various GSM
bands.
–
“PTT limits for various GSM bands”
– Here you will find the PTT and the
related limits for the various GSM bands.

“Voice coding”
– A short introduction to GSM voice coding, bit classes and
diagonal interleaving.
–
“MS power classes”
– This table gives all the information on the coding of
the MS power classes for various GSM bands.
–
“Coding of RX Qual”
– Here you will find a table explaining the coding of the
parameter RX qual, transmitted by the mobile with a measurement report.
–
“Coding of RX Lev”
– Here you will find a table explaining the coding of the
parameter RX lev, transmitted by the mobile with a measurement report.
These sections only provide you with a very basic overview. If you would like to
know more about GSM, we kindly recommend to check the following book:

Anatomy of a GSM
network
GSM is a so-called
cellular network
. This means that the geographical area
covered by the network is subdivided into cells. The geographical size of such a
cell is determined by a radius of between some 100 meters and up to 30 km,
depending on the expected use within the cell.
