2 When the mobile is switched on, it scans the frequency bands for a valid
network. When it finds and accepts the 4460 GSM System Option and 4468
EDGE System Option GSM/GPRS network, it may (or may not) perform a
Location Update for its GSM presence in the network.
3 The mobile phone will have to initiate a GPRS Attach procedure. Depending
on the implementation in the mobile phone, this could be done in one of
two ways:
– Some mobile phones initiate the GPRS Attach automatically after they
selected a network which has GPRS capabilities.
– In other mobile phones, the GPRS Attach is initiated only when the user
requests a GPRS service, e.g. by selecting an appropriate entry on the
user interface of the mobile phone.
4 The 4400 and the mobile will communicate via UL/DL TBFs to exchange
protocol information. When the procedure is concluded successfully:
– The mobile phone will usually indicate that it is registered to a GPRS
network (e.g. by the word “GPRS” in its display).
– The 4400 will indicate the multislot class of the mobile in the Multislot
class field on the EGPRS Basic menu.
– The background of the EGPRS Attach field in the call graph of the EGPRS
Basic menu will turn green.
– No TBF will be active.
GPRS test mode
The 4468 EDGE System Option uses the GPRS Test Mode and applies basically the
same protocol as in a GPRS BLER-USF test.
EDGE modulation and
coding schemes
The 4400 uses MCS-1 for signaling and assigns and packet data traffic channel
with MCS-5 for uplink user data transfer. MCS-5 applies 8-PSK modulation.
