Summary of the key stages
OF FOOD DIVERSIFICATION
BY MONTH AND BY FOOD TYPE
Do not start diversifying your baby's food with purées
without first checking with your baby's paediatrician. It
is important for him or her to assess whether your baby
is ready or whether you should wait a little longer.
Your baby’s main source of food will remain breast milk for some
time, in line with the paediatrician's recommendations.
Food diversification is an exciting time during which your baby is
ready to try a variety of foods with different textures and tastes.
Your baby will gradually learn to chew in their first year. They will
progress from a liquid diet to a diet made up of increasingly solid
foods.
In addition, promoting fruit and vegetables early in life as part of
your baby’s usual meals will encourage them to eat a balanced diet
as they grow up. It has been shown that offering a wide variety of
fruits and vegetables from the start of the diversification process
leads, in the short term, to greater acceptance of a larger variety
of foods.
Some frequently asked questions
Can I buy frozen or tinned vegetables and fruit?
Frozen and tinned vegetables contain good quantities of vitamins
and minerals. Chose those without added salt or sugar.
Should I peel fruit and vegetables?
If the fruits or vegetables are not peeled, choose organic produce
which has been grown with fewer pesticides.
What should I do with leftovers or excess food when
preparing a meal?
You can make a soup with extra or leftover vegetables. Or use
leftover fruit to make dishes like stewed fruit. You can also freeze
vegetables which have been washed, peeled and chopped.
What type of cooking is best?
Steaming is the best option. It allows you to preserve the
organoleptic properties (or aspects of the food as experienced by
the senses, including taste, sight, smell and touch) of your fruit and
vegetables during cooking. It also helps you to limit the amount of
cooking fats added, such as oil or butter. You can also cook your
fruit and vegetables in a pan or in the oven. The texture should be
adjusted according to the child’s age (smooth purée, less-smooth
purée, mashed, small pieces etc.)
How and for how long can I keep my homemade
baby jars?
Ideally, you should prepare and feed your baby the jars on the
same day. This ensures an optimal taste and texture which are not
altered due to reheating.
Baby-food jars containing only fruits and vegetables can be stored
in the fridge for 48 hours; jars containing meat, fish or eggs can be
stored in the fridge for 24 hours.
Jars can be stored in the freezer for up to two months. To defrost
the jars, put them in the fridge the day before or use the defrost
function on your Yummy Gourmet.
You can also store your homemade baby-food jars by sterilising
them. To sterilise a mixture, it must be poured into glass jars with a
rubber seal and you will need a large pot of water. Place the filled
and sealed glass jars in the pot. They must be entirely covered in
water. Bring the water to a boil in the pot. Allow to cook for 20
minutes. Leave to cool. The jars can then be stored for up to 12
months.
When opening the jar, make sure that you hear a "pop" sound,
which indicates proper sterilisation and preservation.
