Your baby is growing and becoming interested in the
food that is offered to them. They can start to taste new
foods and discover new flavours and textures. However,
milk remains their main source of food.
BREAST MILK
Milk remains the main source of food. Your child should continue
to drink at least 500 ml of milk per day.
In addition to feeding your child, milk helps to hydrate them for
the first few months. This means you do not have to give them
water as well, except in hot weather. Don’t wait for them to
become thirsty. Fruit juice is not recommended for infants: breast
milk or infant formula provide the vitamins and minerals they
need, so you don't need to supplement with juice.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
You can start feeding your child vegetables from the sixth month:
in their milk bottle or by spoon-feeding them alongside breast-
feeding.
Vegetables
Choosing -
Choose varieties that your baby's stomach can
tolerate: green beans, spinach, courgettes with skin and seeds
removed, leeks (white part only), carrots etc. At this stage, avoid
fibre-rich vegetables such as salsify, artichoke and the green part
of leeks.
Preparing -
Vegetables should always be cooked. If you are
bottle-feeding your child, start by replacing the water in the bottle
with the water that the vegetables were cooked in, without adding
any salt (i.e. 210 g of broth + 7 scoops of milk). You can then
gradually add blended vegetables to make a thicker soup with only
5 scoops of milk.
If you are breast-feeding, boil or steam the vegetables, again
without adding salt. Then blend to obtain a thick soup texture and
feed with a spoon.
When? -
At lunchtime, in addition to milk, in a bottle or by
spoon-feeding. From 6 months onwards, you can give them a
bottle of soup with 5 scoops of milk for their evening meal.
Fruit
Start introducing fruit two weeks after introducing vegetables.
At this age, fruit should always be cooked.
Choosing -
Some options to be preferred: pears, apples,
peaches, bananas or apricots.
Preparing -
Make purées using ripe fruit which is cooked and
then blended, without adding sugar. You can use apple as a base:
children often like its soft texture and natural sweet flavour. You
can gradually introduce different and less smooth textures. Try to
only introduce one fruit a day to allow your child to get used to the
taste.
When? -
At lunchtime or alongside their afternoon bottle or
feed.

BIRTH TO 4–6 MONTHS
4 TO 8 MONTHS
9 TO 12 MONTHS
12 TO 18 MONTHS
Your baby can only consume liquids. Breast
milk is the only food your baby should be
having.
Breast milk substitutes (or infant formula)
are also a good alternative.

FOOD DIVERSIFICATION
Your baby is growing and becoming

However, milk remains their main source
of food.
Your child now eats a varied diet, but their
needs are not yet the same as those of an
adult.
They gradually eat the same as the rest of
the family.
However, milk and dairy products still form
a very important part of their diet.
