6-5 Installing the Air Shroud
Air Shrouds
Air shrouds concentrate airflow to maximize fan efficiency. The SC848 chassis air
shrouds (p/n MCP-310-41804-0B) do not require screws to install them.
Installing the Air Shroud
1. Power down the system, remove the cords from the back of the power
supplies and open the chassis top cover.
2. Place the air shroud in the chassis so that it fits between the middle bracket
and the rear window.
3. Insert the front hooks of the air shroud into the interstices on the back of the
middle fan bracket.
4. Put the top cover back on the chassis, plug the power cords back into the
power supplies and power up the system.

6-6 Cooling System
The SC848 chassis contains four 9-cm system fans that provide cooling for the
chassis and three 8-cm exhaust fans at the rear of the chassis for expelling hot
air. All fans are hot-swappable, there is no need to power down the system when
replacing fans.
Replacing a System Fan
1. If necessary, open the chassis top cover while the power is running to
determine which fan has failed. (Never run the server for an extended period
of time with the chassis top cover open.)
2. Power down the system, unplug the cords from the back of the power
supplies and remove the chassis top cover.
3. Press the fan release tab to lift the failed fan from the chassis and pull it
completely from the chassis.
4. Place the new fan into the vacant space in the housing while making sure
the arrows on the top of the fan (indicating air direction) point in the same
direction as the arrows on the other fans.
5. Power up the system and check that the fan is working properly before
installing the top cover back onto the chassis.

Note: when installing four memory modules as shown below, you must purchase
a secondary air shroud from SMC (p/n MCP-310-41805-0B).
