High speed flying
When flying at high speeds, particular attention must be paid to the maximum
speed limits associated with the various flap settings. These speeds are
clearly visible marked on the airspeed indicator (ASI) in different colours.
The aircraft is controllable without any effort up to V
NE
= 280 km/h (151 kt, 174
mph).
Full deflections of control surfaces may only be applied up to V
A
= 180 km/h
(97 kt, 112 mph).
Up to V
NE
= 280 km/h (151 kt, 174 mph) only one third (1/3) of the full
deflection range is permissible. Avoid especially sudden elevator control
movements.
In strong turbulence, i.e. in wave rotors, thunderclouds, visible whirlwinds or
when crossing mountain ridges, the maximum speed in rough air V
RA
= 180
km/h (97 kt, 112 mph) must not be exceeded.
With the c/g at an aft position, the control stick movement from the point of
stall to maximum permissible speed is relatively small, though the change in
speed will be noticed through a perceptible change in control stick loads.
The airbrakes may be extended up to V
NE
= 280 km/h (151 kt, 174 mph).
However, at speeds above maneuvering speed, they should only be fully
extracted in emergency cases. When the airbrakes are extended fast at high
speeds, high deceleration forces will occur. At high speeds unlocked airbrakes
are violently sucked further out.
Important note:
The manual retraction force for the airbrakes increases considerably with
increasing airspeed. Therefore, it may not be possible to retract the
airbrakes at speeds above the maneuvering speed.
The airspeed then must be reduced to values below the maneuvering
speed and initially the manual force on the actuation handle must be
eased back.
Then the airbrakes can be retracted with normal manual force.
