Other emergencies
Flying with water ballast on one side
If, while flying or dumping water ballast (for example due to leaks in the water
tanks or a single blocked dumping valve), the weight distribution should become
asymmetrical this can be noticed by having to deflect the ailerons for flying
straight. In such a situation entering a stall must be avoided.
Should such a situation be caused by a leak in the water tanks, the asymmetrical
weight distribution can be remedied by dumping the whole water-ballast.
In case of a single blocked dumping valve the dumping process should be stopped
in order not to increase the asymmetry.
When landing in this condition, the touch down speed must be increased by about
10 km/h (5 kt, 6 mph) and the pilot must be prepared to veer off course as the
heavier wing tends to drop somewhat sooner than normal (apply opposite aileron).
Jammed elevator or flap control
Jammed flaps will just result in “fixed profile” flight behaviour. On approach and
landing the speed should be selected according the fixed flap setting.
In the reciprocal case however, the pilot should consider that the aircraft can still
be controlled, though jammed elevator, to at least some extent by using its flaps:
Flap lever pulled back:
= slower
Flap lever pushed forward:
= faster
This may for example allow the pilot to move over to a more favourable bail-out
area or maybe even avoid bailing-out in some cases.
