19.10 GYRO SETTINGS
This function is used for adjusting gyro gain (sensitivity) from
the transmitter. Gyro gain can be entered as a percentage, and
it is also possible to select the gyro type. You can assign a
switch for changing gyro gain to any of three settings (Rate 1,
2 or 3). As with many functions, it is also possible to determine
whether the settings are to apply to all flight modes or only to
one mode (Glob. or Sepa. mode).
The function has already been described in Section 18.13 on
page 77 of the Model menu for fixed-wing model aircraft, and
the method of setting it up is largely identical. However, since
the gyro settings are particularly important for model helicop-
ters, we will cover this function again at this juncture, not least
because it includes the option of remote gyro calibration.
When you activate the ‘Gyro’ option in the Model menu, the
screen looks like this:
The menu has three identical levels in which you can set three
different gain values (Rates 1 - 3). The first step is to activate
the mixer in the usual fashion: simply mark the appropriate
field in the Status line, and the label in the field changes from
‘INA’ to ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ according to the physical position of the
switch.
In the ‘Type’ column you should enter the type of gyro fitted to
the model. For AVCS or ‘heading hold’ gyros enter ‘GY’ as the
type; for others select the ‘NORM’ type. In the ‘Switch’ column
you can select a switch and its direction of operation using the
familiar procedure. The default setting is ‘NONE’, i.e. the func-
tion is constantly switched on. The effects and method of set-
ting the ‘Glob’ or ‘Sepa’ mode have already been described;
the settings are adjusted at far right on the screen.
If you have entered ‘GY’ as gyro type, you have the option of
entering whether it is to work in normal (NOR) or ‘AVCS’ mode.
For more information on this, please refer to the instructions
supplied with the gyro you are using. The gain for the gyro is
entered in the usual way as a percentage value, with the help
of the arrow buttons. In each case the adjustment range is 0%
to 100%; the default setting is 0%. Pressing the ‘Reset’ field
restores the default setting.
It is possible to program a transmitter control for carrying out
fine adjustments to this function (fine-tuning); changes are
implemented in the separate ‘Fine-tuning’ frame in the usual
manner. Mark the appropriate field and select your preferred
transmitter control in the transmitter control / switch select
menu which then appears.
Once you have marked the column of the corresponding field,
you can enter the fine-tuning rate using the arrow buttons; the
adjustment range is 0% to 20%.
If you need to reverse the direction of effect, mark the field
containing the prefix, and it will change from ‘+’ to ‘-’; the fine-
tuning now works in the opposite direction to the previous set-
ting.
The screen shot below shows a typical example of gyro pro-
gramming.
NOTE:
As of software version 1.0.10, Encoder 1.31, gyro gain can
only be adjusted using this menu, i.e. the ability to alter gain
using a transmitter control on the gyro channel has been deli-
berately removed, since a number of users entered settings in
both menus, and the interaction of these settings gave undes-
irable results.
If you wish to circumvent this limitation, simply select the
‘Gyro 2’ function in the Functions menu instead of ‘Gyro’. This
arrangement restores the ability to carry out adjustments using
a transmitter slider. If you opt for this solution, do not enter set-
tings in this menu.
