18.13 GYRO SETTINGS
If you wish to use a gyro in a fixed-wing model aircraft in order
to stabilise one flight axis, this is the menu you use for entering
the settings for the gyro. The basic purpose of this menu is to
allow the pilot to adjust gyro gain (sensitivity) from the trans-
mitter for a maximum of three gyros - i.e. one for each primary
axis of the model aeroplane.
Gyro gain can simply be programmed as a percentage value,
but it is also possible to select the gyro type. You can assign a
switch which is used to set the gain to any of three values from
the transmitter. As with many functions, it is also possible to
determine whether the settings are to apply to all flight modes
(Glob) or only to the currently activated flight mode (Sepa).
Mark the ‘Gyro’ option in the Model menu. The screen now
looks like this:
The menu features three identical levels which are used to
enter three different gain levels (Rates 1 - 3). This function
must first be activated in the Status line in the usual way by
marking the appropriate field; the field will then switch to ‘ON’
or ‘OFF’, according to the position of the switch. Please note
that this only occurs if you have assigned and activated a
channel for adjusting gyro gain in the ‘Function’ menu of the
Base menu (Section 16.7).
In the ‘Type’ column you should enter the type of gyro installed
in the model. For AVCS or ‘heading hold’ gyros enter ‘GY’ as
the type; for others select the ‘NORM’ type. In the ‘Switch’
column you can select a switch and its direction of operation
using the familiar procedure. The default setting is ‘NONE’, i.e.
the function is constantly switched on. The effects and
method of setting the ‘Glob’ or ‘Sepa’ mode have already
been described; the settings are adjusted at far right on the
screen.
The fields for setting the gain levels for the (max.) three gyros
are grouped together in a separate field. If you have entered
‘GY’ as gyro type, you have the option of choosing whether it
is to work in normal (NOR) or ‘AVCS’ mode; this applies to
each gyro separately. For more information on this, please
refer to the instructions supplied with the gyro you are using.
The gain for the three (possible) gyros is entered in the usual
way as a percentage value, with the help of the arrow buttons.
In each case the adjustment range is 0% to 100%; the default
setting is 0%. Pressing the ‘Reset’ field restores the default
setting.
This screen shot shows a sensible programming set-up for the
Gyro function.
You should program a gain value for each gyro installed in your
fixed-wing model aircraft. Currently this setting is not effective,
as switch ‘D’ is in the ‘OFF’ position. This state is displayed In
the Status field.
Gyro 1 is a normal gyro, and the gain setting you can call up is
set to 30%. Gyro 2 is working in heading-hold mode with a
pre-set of 20%. The third gyro is also a heading-hold gyro,
with a switchable sensitivity of 30%. In our example the set-
tings apply to all flight modes.
For a more complex model aircraft equipped with two aileron
servos and a triple-axis stabilisation system, the following set-
tings would be typical:
