2.3 Environmental conditions
Attention!
Please avoid exposing prosthetic components to corrosive elements such as fresh water,
salt water, acids and other liquids. Using this medical product in such environmental
conditions will render all claims against Otto Bock HealthCare null and void.
Please inform your patients.

2.4 Construction and function
(Fig. 2 – 4)
The amputee will experience considerably greater comfort and stability during stance and swing
phase with the proven joint. Two axial forks connect the upper and lower joint section to one another
and create a kinematic chain. A pivoting mount (Fig. 2, A) joins the lower joint section to the rear
axial fork, which is also connected to the EBS
PRO
shock absorbing unit (Fig. 2, B).
At heel strike, the proximal joint sections swing posteriorly around the lower axes (Fig. 4, D). The
EBS
PRO
unit is compressed as the pivoting mount rotates (Fig. 3b and 4E). This pivoting mount
serves as a visual control for measuring the efficiency of the EBS
PRO
function. The resistance of the
EBS
PRO
unit is continuously adjustable and can be set for the weight and activity level of the patient
(see Section 4.3.2.2).
The multiaxial action of the joint is composed of rotary and gliding movements. The center of rotation
(instantaneous center of rotation) varies with the flexion position (Fig. 4, F).
The EBS
PRO
unit (EBS = Ergonomically Balanced Stride) is a special feature. With special, hydrauli-
cally created resistances the unit at heel strike allows cushioned stance flexion of up to 15° before
normal swing flexion is initiated. The unit‘s progressive cushioning allows optimal control of stance
phase flexion in dependence of the walking speed of the prosthesis wearer. When walking slowly, the
EBS
PRO
unit allows a higher degree of knee flexion at heel strike. In conjunction with its polycentric
kinematics, the joint thus provides optimal stability and comfort. With higher walking speeds stance
flexion damping increases, thereby increasingly limiting flexion and enabling the amputee to walk
dynamically and in energy efficient manner. Thanks to this function, walking with the prosthesis
becomes much more comfortable and physiological over a large range of walking speeds.
