WS4 Technical Overview
Customer Display/Mag Card Reader Port (COM3)
WS4 System Board COM3 Configuration - AB28-I or ABRD36-B
To fully support a high-speed LCD Customer Display interface while at the same
time, retaining support for slower Mag Stripe Reader and VFD Customer Display
sharing the same port, the COM3 interface changes significantly on the AB28-I
system board. A block diagram of the AB28-I COM3 interface is shown in Figure
2-23. The ABRD36 system board (and ABRD86) includes this circuit.
Both a Transmit Multiplexer (TX MUX) and Receive Multiplexer (RX MUX)
have been added. General Purpose IO (GPIO) lines from Super IO U15 provide
Input Enable (IE) signals for the RX MUX, and Output Enable (OE) signals for
the TX MUX. The RX and TX Multiplexer acts as a ‘traffic cop’ routing COM3
data to/from each device as required.

Other changes to the COM3 interface include the addition of an RX line to
Customer Display connectors J1 (Rear) and CN4 (Pole), and the addition of a TX
line to the Mag Stripe Interface connector CN10. Adding an RX line to the
customer display connectors allows the LCD Customer Display to report it’s
firmware version.
To support in-circuit programming of the LCD Customer Display firmware, two
additional pins were added to J1. Pole Display connector CN4 is limited to 4-pins,
therefore in-circuit firmware programming is not supported.
