WS4 Technical Overview

DP83815 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Controller

It is important to note that while full auto-negotiation with the use of Fast Link
Pulse code words can interpret and configure to support full-duplex, parallel
detection can not recognize the difference between full and half duplex from a
fixed 10 Mb/s or 100 Mb/s partner over twisted-pair.

Therefore, as specified in 802.3u, if a far end link partner (a switch or hub) is
transmitting forced full-duplex 100BASE-TX for example, the parallel detection
state-machine in the DP83815 would be unable to detect the full duplex capability
of the link partner and would negotiate to a half-duplex 100BASE-TX
configuration. The same scenario applies to 10 Mb/s as well.

LAN LED Indicators (Sheet 9)

The DP83815 supports three LED outputs to indicate the status of LAN Activity,
(Transmit or Receive), and a 100 Mb/s or 10 Mb/s link. The LEDs are integrated
into the rear panel RJ45 LAN connectors as shown in the Figure 2-19, below.

The Link/Connection speed LED shown on the left indicates a valid link
(connection) and the color indicates the connection speed. The LED10N and
LED100N outputs of the DP83815 drive a bi-color LED. The LED10N output
drives the Orange input of the LED to indicate a 10 Mbps connection, while the
LED100N output drives the Green input of the LED to indicate a 100 Mbps
connection speed.

A blinking Activity LED indicates Transmit or Receive activity.

Wake On LAN/Power Management Event (Sheet 9 and 17)

The DP83815 Wake ON LAN logic provides several mechanisms for bringing the
device out of a low power or

SUSPEND

power management state. The WS4 uses

Wake On Magic Packet™ feature of the Ethernet Controller’s Wake
Command/Status Register (WCSR).
