WS4 Troubleshooting
Workstation 4 Diagnostic Utility

EEPROM.DLL

This file provides access to the system board serial EEPROM, used to store the 
system board serial number and last power management state.

WS4Beep.DLL

This driver allows applications to access the system board beeper. At boot time, 
the Boot Loader controls the beeper.

WinCE Version

The current Microsoft WinCE Version number.

MICROS Build Version

The MICROS Build Version is incremented when a change is made to an internal 
Windows CE driver or a change/update to Windows CE itself. ‘internal’ driver is 
added, deleted or updated. By ‘internal’ drivers we mean drivers that are part of 
the Windows CE image and not visible in the \DOC folder. 

CAL Version

This field displays the current CAL Client residing on the workstation.

Other Platform Files and Folders

Several other platform related files and folders are also located on the DOC. These 
files either have no extension or a .DAT extension. Note that files with a .DAT 
extension are not shown by default in My Computer. Windows CE 4.x considers files 
with .DAT extension to be “Protected Operating System Files” and hides them. To 
view all files in My Computer, click View - Options, and remove the check boxes 
found in that window.

Start with the folders first, then go to the files in the \DOC folder.

\DOC\HWInf\ddi_gx_sharp.inf

Contained in the HWInf folder, this file appeared when the change-over from 
Samsung to Sharp LCD Panels occurred. The WS4 API reads this text file at 
start-up and uses the values contained within to apply a set of ‘backlight 
brightness correction values’ to the fixed values (originally targeted to match the 
Samsung LCD that originally shipped at the introduction of the WS4) contained in 
the CPLD. The CPLD in turn supplies PWM values to the backlight inverter that 
determine backlight brightness at the BRIGHT, DIM, and NORMAL settings.

\DOC\McrsCAL Folder

This folder contains the CAL Client, McrsCAL.exe and a collection of .dll files 
used by this program.

\DOC\Utilities Folder

This folder contains the WS4 Diagnostics and Wipe Compact Flash utilities along 
with two registry utilities used by the CAL to extract and restore specific CAL 
registry settings that must be preserved across application downloads or platform 
upgrades.
