Triggering of belt tensioners, belt force
limiters and airbags
In the event of a collision, the sensor in the
airbag control unit evaluates important
physical data such as duration, direction
and force of the vehicle deceleration or ac-
celeration. Based on the evaluation of this
data and depending on the vehicle's rate of
longitudinal deceleration in a collision, in
the first stage the airbag control unit
pre-emptively triggers the belt tensioners.
The front airbags are not deployed unless
an even higher rate of vehicle deceleration
in a longitudinal direction is exceeded.
Your vehicle is fitted with adaptive
dual-stage front airbags. The front airbag is
filled with enough gas to reduce signifi-
cantly the risk of injury when the first trig-
gering threshold is reached. The front
airbag is not filled with the maximum
amount of gas unless the rate of vehicle
deceleration detected by the control unit
exceeds a second threshold within a few
milliseconds.
Individual systems could be triggered inad-
vertently or may not be triggered at all in the
event of an accident with a sufficiently high
rate of vehicle deceleration. If this happens,
have the SRS system checked and repaired
immediately at a qualified specialist work-
shop which has the necessary specialist
knowledge and tools to carry out the work
required. Mercedes-Benz recommends that
you have such work carried out at an SLR
Service Centre. In particular, work relevant
to safety or on safety-related systems must
be carried out at a qualified specialist work-
shop.

The passenger front airbag is only triggered
if the

indicator lamp on the centre
console (

page 45) is not lit.
The belt tensioners are only triggered if the seat
belt buckle tongue is correctly engaged in the
seat belt buckle.
