7. Operation in explosive areas
The explosion-proof encoder 70x3SIL complies with the design requirements of Equipment Group II,
Category 2G (Ex atmosphere Gas) and 2D (Ex atmosphere Dust).
Compliance with the directives according to 94/9/EC CE marking:
Use in other explosive areas is not allowed.
The installation and assembly of electrical devices may be carried out exclusively by a qualified elec-
trician! Repair work and mounting of spare parts or attachments may be carried out exclusively by
the Kübler Company.
The devices may be operated only within the limit values as they are stated in the technical data.
The maximum operating voltages must not be exceeded!
The encoders of the 70x3SIL model series have been designed, developed and manufactured in
compliance with the relevant safety requirements of the following industrial standards:
Protection class:
DIN EN 60529 IP6X: 2000
Climate testing:
DIN EN 60068-2-3: 1986
Emission of interferences:
DIN EN 61000-6-3 and DIN EN 61000-6-4: 2003
Shock resistance:
DIN EN 60068-2-27: 1995
Vibration resistance:
DIN EN 60068-2-6: 1996
Manufactured according to: DIN EN 61010-1 protection class III: 2002
To prevent dangerous structure-borne currents, the encoders must be operated with safety extra-low
voltages (SELV) and be located in an area with equipotential bonding.
Use an external fuse for protection (see the electrical data).
Fields of application: industrial processes and controls.
Over-voltages at the terminals of the device must be kept within the limits of overvoltage category II.
Avoid shocks to the housing – especially to the encoder shaft – and axial and radial overload to the
encoder shaft. Maximum accuracy and durability of the encoders are only granted when using à suit-
able coupling.
The high-level EMC characteristics are only valid in connection with cables and connectors supplied
as a standard. When using shielded cables, the shield must be connected to ground over a large
area. Also the voltage supply cables should be entirely shielded. If this is not possible, appropriate fil-
tering measures must be taken. The installation environment and the wiring have a significant influ-

6. EMC Information
• Use only shielded twisted-paired conductors as encoder cables.
• Connect the shield at both ends to the ground on a large contact area. Make sure that the cable
shields are well fastened.
• When wiring your installation, take care to route the cables properly. Separate the wiring in cable
groups such as motor / power supply cables and signal / data cables. Route the signal and data
cables as close as possible to grounded surfaces (supporting beams, metal rails, cabinet sides) and
not parallel to motor and power supply cables.
• Connect all equipment with low impedance to the ground/ protective conductor system.
