SAFETY
RISKS
FOR EYES AND SKIN
If subjected to intense laser radiation, even for brief periods, or to less intense radiation but for extended
periods, both the cornea and the retina may be burnt and damaged irreparably. This is a very real possibility
in the case of exposure to a class IV laser beam.
Direct exposure to focused laser radiation may also cause the skin to burn. Furthermore, it should be noted
that the main radiation may also be accompanied by collateral radiation in the ultraviolet region, which can
cause carcinomas in the event of prolonged exposure.
ATTENTION: Always use certified eye protectors (an example of a certified device is shown
in Fig. 2). Remember that no type of eyewear is capable of protecting against prolonged direct
exposure!
GENERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
In order to avoid compromising the safety level of the equipment, the user must behave appropriately and
ensure that the most rigorous possible safety conditions are maintained at all times. Thus, it is necessary to
develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) relating to the manoeuvres that must be carried out when
activating and deactivating the device. This procedure, displayed near the device, shall serve as a reference
for the Operator and will be written in his own language.
It is also essential to ensure that personnel receive appropriate training designed to:
• Familiarise them with the system operating procedures
• Ensure they are aware of the biological effects of radiation on eyes and skin
• Ensure they understand the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
An additional risk is represented by the possibility of fires if the device is used to process materials other than
those it is intended for. The most serious collateral risk associated with a laser device is, without doubt, the
potentially lethal hazard posed by electricity.
This risk may arise when personnel fail to observe the warnings and procedures imposed by the equipment
manufacturer. Unauthorised and inexperienced personnel must never attempt any kind of intervention on the
electrical part.
