cations and prices subject to change without notice. Download latest update to this manual on-line.
In accordance with the Periodic Maintenance Chart, change the brake
fl
uid once a year. Brake
fl
uid should also be
changed if it becomes contaminated with dirt or water. Furthermore, brake
fl
uid should be changed whenever brake line
parts are removed to bleed.
NOTE:
Do not mix two types of
fl
uid. Flush brake
fl
uid in the brake line completely. If brake
fl
uid must be re
fi
lled, use
D.O.T 3.
Fill the reservoir to within 1/4” of the top with fresh, speci
fi
ed brake
fl
uid; install the reservoir cap.
TECH TIP
: Use a turkey baster or other pump device to remove as much
fl
uid as possible from the master cylinder.
If not using A Power bleeder, Follow THE “Pump and bleed” procedure shown on page 7-17.
J&J can also provide a handy brake
fl
uid change
pump: the power bleeder (# 3-96-0032).
This pump allows one person to bleed the brake
system. Simply remove old brake
fl
uid from the
master cylinder with turkey baster and re
fi
ll the
reservoir with new
fl
uid. Do not pump excessively
dirty
fl
uid through the brake system.
Firmly attach the power bleeder cap to the master
cylinder, ensuring that the gasket seats properly.
Tighten the pump cap onto the empty power bleeder,
pressurize to 10psi and check for leaks. If there are
no leaks, release pressure, unscrew the pump cap
and add up to 2 quarts of new brake
fl
uid.
Tighten the pump cap and pressurize (do not exceed
20psi).
Attach the bleed tube to the bleed valve on the
caliper; open the bleed valve. Bleed until
fl
uid runs
clear and free of bubbles; tighten bleed valve.
BRAKE FLUID CHANGE
BRAKE FLUID LEVEL INSPECTION
In accordance with the Periodic Maintenance Chart, inspect the brake
fl
uid
level.
Remove the master cylinder cap;
fl
uid should be kept within 1/4” of the top
edge.
Recommended brake
fl
uid type: Automotive D.O.T. 3 or D.O.T. 4.
Factory installed brake
fl
uid is D.O.T. 3
(See comparison of
fl
uid on page 7-15).
